Compassionate Reprieve is the world’s first nonprofit organization to pioneer GriefTech for correctional settings a groundbreaking approach to restoring dignity and emotional connection behind bars.
We provide secure, DOJ-compliant streaming funeral access for incarcerated individuals, allowing them to virtually attend the funerals of loved ones when physical attendance is not permitted. In moments of grief, loss, and final goodbyes, we believe every human being deserves the chance to mourn no matter where they are.
Why We Exist
Across the U.S., thousands of incarcerated individuals are denied the opportunity to attend a loved one’s funeral due to strict prison policies, security concerns, or logistical barriers. Traditional compassionate release is rare, and physical transport is often costly or denied altogether.
This lack of access fuels:
- Unresolved grief
- Depression and mental health decline
- Emotional detachment from family
- Increased behavioral issues and institutional strain
Compassionate Reprieve was created to change that.
What Is GriefTech?
GriefTech is the use of secure, ethical technology to support grieving individuals in institutional settings. At Compassionate Reprieve, our GriefTech model integrates:
- Live-streamed and recorded funerals with content moderation
- Facility-integrated delivery systems aligned with DOC security policies
- Human-centered workflows involving chaplains, counselors, and correctional staff
- End-of-life access protocols tailored for correctional environments
We work directly with departments of corrections, chaplaincy programs, and approved funeral homes to coordinate safe and respectful participation in family memorials.
Secure. Compliant. Compassionate.
Every stream delivered through Compassionate Reprieve adheres to:
- DOJ and state-level policies
- Institutional technology standards
- Chaplains’ or administrators’ oversight
- Trauma-informed, grief-sensitive practices
Our model protects inmate dignity, institutional trust, and family connection all in one.

Our Mission
We exist to ensure that even behind bars, love deserves a final goodbye.
Grief does not end at the prison gate and neither should our compassion. With each virtual funeral we stream, we create space for healing, humanity, and hope.
